Heart of the Valley YMCA dedicates second addition

A growing community demands growing services, and the Heart of the Valley YMCA in Kimberly has responded again, dedicating its second addition to the original facility built in 2002 on Tuesday afternoon. The Y opened with 80,000 sq. ft. of space that housed a wellness center, gymnasium, indoor track, multi-purpose space, dance studio, and a gymnastics center. The Y had just more than 700 members when it opened. The first addition, completed in 2008, added the Endries Gymnasium, and membership grew by 34 percent. <MORE>

NEENAH – The Studio Y Dance Program at the Neenah-Menasha YMCA was awarded the “Top Studio Award” at the Rainbow Connection National Dance Competition held July 4-9 at the Kalahari Resort, Wisconsin Dells.

The Studio Y Dance program, under the direction of choreographers Tab Bullard, Maeghan Johnson and Dana Kruger, earned this award for having the most high score awards earned in the competition. <MORE>

8th Annual Children's Parade in Appleton

The 8th Annual Children's Parade in Appleton is on Wednesday, July 27th!

We learned all about how kids 12 and under can express their imaginations in parades, costumes, so much more.

The Parade starts at 6 p.m. on College Avenue.

Children’s Parade is part of Children’s Week, an annual community-wide celebration of kids. Last year more than 7,000 people enjoyed Children’s Week. Money raised through sponsorship and events benefits Appleton Parks & Recreation, the Appleton YMCA and The Building for Kids Children’s Museum, organizations that support kids and families all year long. <MORE>

Sports Beat recreation calendar for May 22

The Neenah-Menasha YMCA is taking registrations for its Boys 7-on-7 Touch Football Passing Leagues. There are grades 6-7 and grades 8-9 leagues. Games will run Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. from June 14 to July 19, with no games on July 5. Only players from the Neenah and Menasha school districts can register individually at the Neenah-Menasha YMCA. Coaching and instruction will be from Neenah and Menasha high school football players and coaches. The cost is $20 for YMCA members and $25 for the general public. Heart of the Valley expansion project breaks gorund

KIMBERLY — The groundbreaking ceremony for the Heart of the Valley expansion project took place Thursday in Kimberly. Project officials say there will be a number of facility upgrades to the current center including wellness equipment upgrades, locker room expansions and more office space. Officials say these changes are being made to fit the community's needs. Some of the new facilities will include a cycling studio, an aerobic studio and a cardio theater. <MORE>

Children’s Week and Children’s Parade are joining forces to create one amazing week for kids that will run Sunday, July 24 – Saturday, July 30. Children’s Week is a community-wide celebration of kids featuring the Children’s Parade, Playground Fair, a free day at the YMCA and more family friendly events.

Neenah tests reverse angle parking by YMCA

Neenah led the Fox Cities into the roundabout revolution, and now the city plans to pioneer another traffic trend: reverse angle parking.

The city will create 13 reverse angle parking stalls in the 100 block of West North Water Street by the Neenah-Menasha YMCA and St. Paul Lutheran Church. The change will be made in June and will be tested for a year. <MORE>

ADI honors downtown businesses

Appleton Downtown Inc. gave its 2016 business awards to an eclectic group that included brewers, a candy shop, two restaurants, several exercise businesses and two individuals who've been passionate about keeping downtown vital, safe and growing.

The Appleton YMCA was presented The Walter Kalata Landmark Award. The award honors a business that has "withstood the test of time," ADI said, to become a downtown landmark. The YMCA has been in downtown Appleton for 128 years and currently has a $1.9 million renovation underway on its building at 218 E. Lawrence St. It's getting a renovated welcome center, redone locker rooms and other improvements.

APPLETON - When Mary Simonis attended Fox Valley Lutheran High School, she didn't realize what her strengths were.

It was only after she spent six years in the military, went to college and came back to the Fox Cities that she realized how she could make a difference in the world.

Her message to more than 300 freshmen on Tuesday was to figure out their strengths and weaknesses now, and build on them.

"We get so stuck on … learning everything about everyone else that we forget to actually learn things about ourselves," she said. "If you never truly know and see how great you are, you will never truly know the difference you can make."

Appleton YMCA revs up for racquetball

One of the main missions of the YMCA is to provide opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities.

So when a couple of Fox Valley men approached Ryan Shanklin a few years ago to gauge interest in holding a racquetball tournament at the YMCA, his answer came quickly.

The result is the Appleton Shootout, which will be held at the downtown Appleton YMCA on Friday and Saturday. It is the third year for the tournament, which started as a member-only event in 2014 and became an open event last year. <MORE>

Fox Cities YMCA Receives Massive Donation

As their Growing Stronger Together Capital Campaign to raise $9 million dollars for additions and and renovations continues, the Fox Cities YMCA just got a big boost.

On Tuesday, they announced that Appleton Scheels and the Scheels foundation donated $513,000 towards their goal. <MORE>

Scheels is contributing $513,000 toward the $9 million campaign. The YMCA is planning projects at four locations to renovate and expand some of the facilities.

Danielle Englebert is the district executive director at the Appleton YMCA. She says the overall fundraising drive is progressing, and they're within $200,000 to $300,000 of their goal.

Englebert says the gift from Scheels helped them start work at the Fox West and Appleton locations. She says they plan to get going on projects at the Heart of the Valley and Neenah-Menasha branches this year.

The Fox West facility is one of four YMCA's in the Fox Cities that will see upgrades.
