Teen and Adult Aquatic Programs

Lifeguard Training

Have you ever thought about becoming a lifeguard? The YMCA offers training courses to gain the certification required to become a professional lifeguard. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be certified in: Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED usage. Class participants must be 15 years old on or before the last day of class. You must attend all classes to complete the course.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

This course is helpful for those individuals who are interested in teaching swimming lessons. You will learn how to properly teach and evaluate students. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be certified in the instruction of swimming lessons. You must be 16 years old on or before the end of the course.

Swim Team

The Fox Cities YMCA Swim Team (FCYST) is a fun and competitive swimming program for all skill levels. FCYST competes in several swim meets throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more about the Fox Cities YMCA Swim Team, please visit their website.

Teen/Adult Swimming Lessons

Are you interested in learning how to swim or just to improve your swimming technique? The YMCA offers swimming lessons for teens and adults in a more comfortable environment: around people in your age group. Class sizes are kept small to ensure that you receive the attention you need. Whether you are starting out or are looking to improve your stroke, the YMCA has a class for you.

Older Youth Classes

From the beginner to intermediate swimmer who prefers to be in a class with others their own age, this class will meet your needs.

Adult Lessons

From the beginner to intermediate swimmer who prefers to be in a class with others their own age, this class will meet your needs.

Joint Efforts (Formerly Slow Stretch)

This Arthritis Foundation/YMCA program is meant for people with arthritis. Classes are held in the Guardian Life Pool at the Appleton YMCA and are taught by instructors certified by the Arthritis Foundation. Water temperature in the Guardian Life Pool is kept around 88 degrees. Medical release forms are required for participation and can be obtained at the Appleton YMCA front desk.

Private Swimming Lessons

The YMCA offers private swimming lessons to people at all swimming levels and abilities. Those people who are uncomfortable in a group setting or are looking to progress at a faster pace can benefit from one-on-one instruction. Private swimming lessons are also a great alternative when our group lessons doesn't fit into your schedule. To find out more information or to set up private lessons, please contact your local YMCA Aquatic Department.

Kayaking

Kayaking Skills

Kayaking classes are held at the Appleton YMCA during the Winter sessions. In this beginner-level class, participants will be introduced to kayaking basics, including equipment, strokes, braces and rescue techniques. Both river and sea kayaks will be used and all boats, paddles and equipment will be provided. Classes are instructed on a volunteer basis by the Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers, Inc. Participants must be 14 years or older to attend.

Rescue Techniques and Eskimo Roll

Participants in this class must have taken the Kayaking Skills class. This is an intermediate-level class. This class is designed to teach or improve rescue techniques and Eskimo rolls. Class size is limited to ensure a low student-to-instructor ratio. Students may use their own equipment, but it must be cleaned before being brought into the pool area. Equipment will be provided for those who do not wish to use their own. Classes are instructed on a volunteer basis by the Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers, Inc. Participants must be 14 years or older to attend.
