Cycling Toward a Better Quality of Life

Pedaling for Parkinson’s is a research-supported group cycling program that helps reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and improves quality of life for both patients and their caregivers. Eligible participants ride indoor cycles at 80–90 RPM in twice-weekly, 60-minute sessions — following the Pedaling for Parkinson’s protocol under the guidance of trained YMCA staff who monitor heart rate and exercise intensity throughout every class. The program runs a minimum of 8 weeks and can continue indefinitely as participants choose to keep going.

How It Works

Pedaling for Parkinson’s is built on research showing that forced-rate exercise — specifically cycling at 80–90 RPM — improves motor function and may have neuroprotective properties for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Here’s what the program involves and what makes it effective.

The Session Format

The Session Format

Participants ride indoor cycles at 80–90 RPM during twice-weekly, 60-minute sessions. YMCA instructors follow the established Pedaling for Parkinson’s protocol and monitor each participant’s heart rate and exercise intensity throughout the class. The program runs a minimum of 8 weeks — and participants may continue indefinitely based on their own goals and progress.

The Research Behind the Program

The Research Behind the Program

Pedaling for Parkinson’s is grounded in best practices for managing Parkinson’s disease through physical activity. Regular physical activity improves gait, balance, coordination, flexibility, agility, and energy. Forced-exercise — such as tandem cycling and treadmill walking — has been shown to improve motor function and has neuroprotective properties. An effective Parkinson’s management program incorporates cardiovascular activities (biking, walking, dancing), strength training, and balance and neuro-motor training. Pedaling for Parkinson’s integrates these principles into every session.

A Program Built on Evidence

The Pedaling for Parkinson’s protocol is based on clinical research demonstrating that high-cadence forced cycling can meaningfully reduce the severity of Parkinson’s symptoms and slow disease progression. Every YMCA instructor leading the program is trained specifically in the Pedaling for Parkinson’s protocol, ensuring each session is safe, purposeful, and effective. Y staff monitor heart rate and exercise intensity throughout every class so participants can push toward their best without risk.
